U.S. Department of Energy Solicits Feedback on Its Plan To Increase Products and Materials Circularity

The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) has today issued an RFI (RFI) HTML2seeking feedback from the public on their conceptual framework regarding circularity in order to safe and sustainable materials and products. The framework highlights potential and issues to utilize circularity to lower carbon emissions as well as secure supply chains to help communities as well as create new jobs. It provides an overview of the current initiatives across EERE and the areas of investment that are likely to be the next focus.

The method that in which the United States and the world has always approached extracting materials, making products, then throwing away the products is destructive to the environment as well as economically unsustainable. Promoting circularity of materials and products that is reducing the environmental footprint of life cycle products through the recirculation of goods and the use of materials in the economic and helps in helping the United States rise material efficiency, boost supply chain security and resilience, as well as reduce the demand for energy related to extraction of raw materials and manufacturing processes.

“Increasing products and materials circularity will enhance our U.S. manufacturing competitiveness, strengthen our supply chain security, and bring direct economic benefits to local communities,” said Jeff Marootian, principal deputy assistant secretary for energy efficiency and renewable energy at DOE. “This strategic framework aims to catalyze the necessary technological advancements that will accelerate these efforts across the economy.”

EERE solicits input from the academic, industry research labs as well as government agencies and other parties on issues relating to circularity of materials and products.

Particularly, EERE is interested in feedback regarding:

  • Framework for prioritizing research and development as well as technology advancements to maximize the impact of opportunities in decarbonization as well as supply chain security benefits to the community and manufacturing competitiveness.
  • Potential opportunities, challenges and opportunities to rise circularity of materials and products.
  • openings for connecting between policy models, business and economics to speed up the use of modern technologies to achieve more impact.
  • Analysis and data that aids in the process of prioritizing and measuring the progress made.

In providing an overview of the current EERE efforts and an outline for determining the desirable priorities for the future investments related to developing circularity of materials and products, EERE aims to boost the awareness of stakeholders, their involvement and alignment which can ultimately result in national-level impact.

Responses to the RFI must be submitted electronically to [email protected] no later than 5 p.m. ET on Dec. 16, 2024.
